Types of Flies We Manage
There are more than 30 types of flies, but here are the ones most commonly found in the Southeast and Midwest regions:
- House Fly - The classic kitchen pest—spreads bacteria with ease. One of the fastest breeders.
- Cluster Fly - Slow-moving, sneaky, and known for infesting attics and wall voids during colder months.
- Fruit Fly - Attracted to ripe produce, beverages, and kitchen drains. Extremely common in homes and restaurants.
- Drain Fly (Moth Fly) - Fuzzy, drainage-loving flies that breed inside bathroom and kitchen pipes.
- Face Fly - Looks similar to a housefly but tends to hang around livestock and outdoor structures.
- Stable Fly - Resembles a housefly but bites like a horsefly. Common around farms.
- Horse Fly - Large, fast, and aggressive. Known for painful bites on pets and livestock.
- Gnat - A tiny flying insect found around gardens, wet areas, and houseplants.
The Wild Cards
Lesser-known but still troublesome species:
- Blow Fly (Green/Blue Bottle) – Metallic appearance; common around garbage.
- Crane Fly – A large mosquito-like insect; harmless but alarming in size.
- Robber Fly – Predatory; feeds on other insects.
- Flesh Fly – Metallic, often found near decaying matter.
- Long-Legged Fly – Metallic green or shiny; usually found outdoors.
- Dance Fly – Quirky mid-air courtship habits; harmless.
